Sports Talent Rewarded
Over 200
people packed the Banff Springs Hotel, Banff recently for the Aberdeenshire
Sports Council 2002 Sports Awards Evening. ‘We had received over 75 nominations
and the selection panel had an incredibly difficult time shortlisting the
nominees for each of the 11 categories due to the exceptionally high quality of
nominees’ said Jim Conn, Chairman, Aberdeenshire Sports Council.
The
evening proved to be a great success and is a way of rewarding and acknowledging
Aberdeenshire sports people for their commitment to and/or achievement in sport
during 2001 or the 2001/2002 season (or in the case of the Service to Sport

v
New Course Record
v
A new
course record was set by Simon Pride from Fochabers, a member of the Metro
Aberdeen club in a time of 1 hour 4 minutes and 47 seconds (1:04.47). Simon
retains his title, breaking his own course record from last year (1:05.24) by 37
seconds! Simon will be representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in
Manchester in the marathon.
Runner
up in 1 hour 10 minutes and 12 seconds (1:10.12) for the second year
running was Alan Reid from Banff (Peterhead AAC). Third Place went to Charlie
Noble (Metro Aberdeen) in 1 hour 12 minutes & 50 seconds (1:12.50)
The
first lady home was Mairi McIvor (Stonehaven Splash ‘n’ Dash) in a time of 1
hour 23 minutes and 12 seconds (1:23.12) with Dawn Hardy (Moray Road Runners)
runner up in 1 hour 26 minutes and 51 seconds (1:26.51). Third lady home was
Carol McLaren (Stonehaven Splash ‘n’ Dash) in 1 hour 27 minutes and 50 seconds.
Donald
Whyte took the male veteran award (40 years+) with Maureen Mackie (Duff House
Runners, Banff) taking the lady veteran award (35 years +).
Peter
Littlefield (Stonehaven Splash ‘n’ Dash) won the male super veteran category
(1:18.49) with Evelyn Coull taking the female super veteran category (1:34.27).
Cash
prizes were on offer this year, sponsored by CWA.
Metro
Aberdeen won the team event.
Individuals from a range of clubs affiliated to Aberdeenshire Sports Council
participated in the event.
‘This is
the seventh year of this annual run which links in with the Scottish Traditional
Boats Festival Weekend. We included for the third time a 2km Fun Run
alongside the main run,’ explained Mike Seed, Aberdeenshire Council Sports
Development Officer. Winner of the 2km fun run was Jamie Clark in 7 minutes and
24 seconds.
Mike
added that it was also particularly pleasing to see that the run is attracting
all ages and plenty of lady runners. He also paid tribute to all the
volunteers and sponsors without whose kind help and support the runs would not
be possible. The RNLI were heavily involved in supporting the event this year
along with Aberdeenshire Council.
‘We had 101 runners enter the 20km run which was a good turn out considering the
poor weather (once again!) over the weekend, though only 38 runners took part in
the fun run which was a little disappointing’ added Roger Goodyear, one of the
organisers.

Elizabeth Woodcock, (who
was in the Big Brother 2 house), finishing fourth, came up to Portsoy to start
the Follow the Herring 20k Road Run and participate in the 2k Fun Run.

excellent day of competition at the recent BAA Aberdeen Airport Youth Games.

Club Members - Information via
E-mail
At a
recent meeting of the Sports Council Working Groups there was a discussion on
how we may be able to reach greater numbers of affiliated club reps. It was
suggested that we contact affiliated clubs with an offer of compiling a database
of e-mail addresses to which we can send regular useful information.
If any
of your club members/coaches/committee wish to receive information via e-mail
please can you collate a list of e-mail addresses for your club and return the
details to Aberdeenshire Sports Council, 1 Church Street, Macduff, AB44 1UR at
your earliest convenience.
Action Plans 2002/2003
The
Working Groups have drafted Action Plans for 2002/2003 which will be approved at
the Executive Committee on 6 August 2002.
However,
the Action Plans are not written in “tablets of stone” and should affiliated
clubs/organisations have suggestions for initiatives these would be welcome.

Plans for 2002/2003 can be viewed on the website -

A Strategy For Sport & Physical Activity In Aberdeenshire 2002-2005
(A
Joint Development Initiative Between Aberdeenshire Council & Aberdeenshire
Sports Council)
All
affiliated clubs and organisations received a copy of the draft document
(together with a consultation response form) during late May.
An open
meeting held on June 18th at Inverurie Town Hall at which Aberdeenshire Sports
Council and Aberdeenshire Council reps gave brief presentations and outline of
progress over the last three years and proposals of the new Strategy attracted a
fairly small audience. However those reps who did attend had many relevant
comments and points to make during the question and answer session. These will
be taken on board along with the rest of the consultation feedback and included
issues around facilities, transport, informal sport and recreational activities
and monitoring/evaluation.
The
consultation period ends on July 31st so if there are clubs/organisations who
have yet to complete the response form there is still time if you hurry. Should
you have mislaid the document you will find it on the Aberdeenshire Sports
Council website www.Aberdeenshire-Sports-Council.org.uk and the
Aberdeenshire Council website
