Developments for Aberdeenshire Disability Sport
(A registered charity working in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council)
A Buddy Scheme
Over the next year ADS hopes to work with clubs to make the integration of people with a disability a reality.
Until now ADS has concentrated on providing specialist activity sessions for people with a disability and whilst continuing to do this we hope also to move more toward integration with mainstream sport for those who wish it.
To do this effectively we would like to work initially with a small group of selected clubs. The way we anticipate it operating is for the club to find a member willing to be a buddy who would be responsible for helping the person with a disability to access the club. This may be by providing transport to and from a venue, introducing the person to other clubs members and just making them feel welcome.
ADS would help by linking people to clubs and buddies and resourcing the club with whatever it needs to make it possible for the disabled person to take part on an equal footing to other members. This may be by providing equipment, assistive devices, solving physical access problems, providing disability awareness training or anything else that's needed.
If your club is serious about welcoming people with a disability, even if it's completely new to you, then do contact us to discuss how you could be involved.
Coach Education Opportunities
ADS would like to train more coaches in providing sport to people with a disability. In many cases a mainstream qualification is fine for coaching people with a disability and all that is needed is imagination and lots of enthusiasm, but some sports do offer specialist modules. We can help by putting on specialist courses or linking people up with a mentor to help and advise. If you are a coach and would like to work with people with a disability please do contact us. We may even have a job for you!
Sport Directory
The disability sport directory produced two years ago has been a great success and well used. Since its production, the good news is that sport for people with a disability has increased considerably and the new issue is bigger and better. Importantly it is also now contained within the main sports directory for Aberdeenshire and we hope you will read it with interest. There is a surprising amount going on but also huge scope for more. Watch this space!
