What is Boccia ?

(Pronounced "botcha")
At the Sports Awards Evening Anne Woffinden was nominated for achievements and success in boccia. A number of guests enquired as to what "boccia" was. Boccia is a game played at paralympic level by cerebral palsy sufferers but can be enjoyed by anyone who adheres to one of the basic rules i.e. staying seated.

It is a game similar to petanque or boules and instead of metal balls, the balls are leather bound (sand filled) and consist of six red, six blue and a white jack ball. In many ways there are great similarities to bowling in that the object is to get as close to the jack as possible. It can be played 1 v 1, 2 v 2 or teams of 3 v 3.
