The International Youth Leader Education Programme 2001

An opportunity not to be missed!

For all 18 - 25 year olds in your club/organisation

The International Youth Leader Education Programme is a four month course in Denmark, from August to December 2001, involving students from many different countries. Scottish students who have taken part in the initiative in previous years including Fiona Hutcheon - Turriff; Michelle McCabe - Ellon; Lorna Allison - Huntly, have found the experience most rewarding and one that has helped them in their individual and career development.

The cost of board and lodging, tuition, etc is free, and Aberdeenshire Sports Council will assist with travel expenses.

In order to apply you must play an active role in a youth organisation and/or sports club at a local, regional or national level, have some previous leadership or coaching experience, be committed to the social development of young people and be able to attend for the full duration of the course. Your club must also support your application.

For further information and application form contact:

Mike Seed, 1 Church Street, Macduff. Tel: 01261 813383 or E-mail: mike.seed@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

This newsletter has been produced in response to feedback from member clubs and organisations, following last years consultation exercise. We hope you like it, however, we need your comments and suggestions.

It is vitally important to us that the newsletter is seen and read by yourselves (i.e. contact person on our database) and all members in your club/organisation. Often urgent action or attention is required by yourself in informing other club members of deadlines for courses or events, giving them details of useful contacts and information, etc.

We rely on you to disseminate the information to all members of your club and bring details to the attention of your club/committee.

Please ensure the Newsletter is displayed where all members can read it and any specific information that may be relevant to certain members is relayed to them.

Your co-operation is essential in ensuring that we communicate effectively and offer the best service to affiliated clubs and organisations. Please feel free to make copies of the Newsletter or contact the office for additional copies.

We shall be refining the Newsletter over the next few editions. The success of any newsletter relies on interesting, relevant and useful information for those reading it, and on the membership letting us know what they want in it. So, if you have specific suggestions for particular sections or articles in the future, or have news from your club or organisation that would be of interest to others please send the details to:

Mike Seed, Sports Development Officer, 1 Church Street, Macduff, AB44 1UR. Tel: 01261 813383 or Fax: 01261 833646 or E-mail: mike.seed@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Congratulations!

At the sportscotland Scottish Coach of the Year Awards 2000, two Aberdeenshire Coaches won prestigious national awards for their commitment and dedication to coaching. Stewart Neilson, football coach from Banff, won the “Male Coach (Coaching Junior Competitors) Category” and Carol McLaren, triathlete coach from Stonehaven, won the “Female Coach (Coaching Individual Performers or Teams) Category”.

Sports Awards Evening

We are proposing to hold one Sports Awards Evening for Aberdeenshire this year. Whilst date and venue are still to be confirmed, it is likely to be held in May, in a central location. We will be building on the successes of previous Awards Evenings and shall be forwarding further details and nomination forms in February. The event is an excellent way of recognising achievement and commitment from sports people and volunteers in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeenshire Sports Council Executive Committee

At the special general meeting, last Autumn, a new Executive Committee was elected and is now working hard to continue to improve its service delivery and services to affiliated clubs and organisations, and to implement many of the suggestions for possible improvements made by the membership during the Summer 2000 consultation exercise. Two Working Groups have been formed - finance and marketing, education/training and development - with Action Plans agreed for each. They are now working to prioritise and implement the Action Plans. A contact list of Executive Committee Members will appear in the next Newsletter.

Child Safety & Protection

Free criminal record checks for volunteers working in the voluntary sector were announced last month. Costs will be met by the Scottish Executive and this will allow checks to be undertaken on those who are involved regularly in working with children. This will only come into effect from July 2001. We shall keep you posted!

For general enquiries contact: The Sports Council Office on 01261 813383.
