Success
for Deveron Gymnastics Club Application
Deveron
Gymnastics Club in Banff will shortly take delivery of a 15 metre Airtrack which
can be used by both recreational and competitive gymnasts of all ages. This will
replace an old and heavy tumble run and have the benefits of freeing up much
needed storage space, encouraging gymnasts to try new moves in a safer
environment and improve safety for gymnasts and coaches minimising injury risk.
The track can also be used for warming up and strength training sessions.
‘
This is great news for the club’, explained Mike Seed, Sports Development
Officer and Aberdeenshire Sports Council Administrator who acted as an
independent referee in respect of the application. ‘ In addition to the
freeing up of much needed storage space and the improved safety aspects, the
airtrack will also cut down significantly on equipment set up / take down time
(the airtrack is installed and blown up in a couple of minutes) thereby allowing
for more actual coaching and practice time’ added Mike.
Garioch
Gymnastics Club received support from Aberdeenshire Sports Council in purchasing
an air track early last year, which has proved to be an excellent piece of
equipment.

Full details of Awards for All grants were given in Issue 4 of the Aberdeenshire
Sports Council newsletter.
Aberdeenshire Disability
Sport
Grant Aid
Aberdeenshire
Disability Sport has benefited from three generous grants from Aberdeenshire
Sports Council this financial year.
£800
has helped buy an adapted wheelchair that will be held at Westburn Indoor Tennis
Centre for use by adults there. A significant contribution to the costs was also
made by tennis professional Iain Craigie who took part in a sponsored walk for
this and other causes. The Grampian
Police Diced Cap Appeal has also helped, as has Aberdeen City Council. Hopes are high that the charity Whizzkids will be able to
supply one or even two chairs suitable for children to use. These will be placed at the tennis club most convenient for
the children who wish to take part.
Another
£500 grant purchased a set of Archery equipment that allowed ten people to be
trained as qualified coaches. These
people are now using their skills to enable people in day centres and special
needs youth clubs and playschemes to enjoy this exciting sport.
The equipment is based at Kemnay Community Education Centre but is
available to be borrowed by other groups.
£200
was spent on purchasing end decks for the trampoline based in Stonehaven.
This is well used by clients of Forestview Daycentre for rebound therapy
and trampolining.
Golden Jubilee Project
Plans
are well underway for an action packed programme of sporting events to celebrate
the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the burgeoning disability sporting talent in
Aberdeenshire. These will include
the Ythan Games, a multisport event based in Ellon, a Boccia Festival, an
Athletics competition and a children’s Fun Day.
Information
on any of the above projects is available from Rachel Boal 01467 628158 or John
Wills 07813 967878.

Increased Demand For
Sports Medicine
Aberdeenshire
Sports Medicine Centres (ASMC) at Ellon and Inverurie are showing signs of
increased usage this year after a fall last year. After 9 months of the year the
figures for Ellon and Inverurie are 108 and 271 attendances compared with last
year’s totals of 119 and 294 respectively. This is positive for the future
service which has received deficit revenue funding from Aberdeenshire Sports
Council of £2500 during this financial year. The Centres also receive
approximately £2000 annually from the Great Inverurie Bike Ride towards
training and personal development.
This
year ASMC has started recording from September 2000 the number of children (U18)
receiving treatment. The percentage of usage at Ellon is high and this may be
reflected in the increased awareness of youngsters of injury prevention and
treatment.
ASMC
are planning for the Balmoral Road Race on Saturday 30th March in providing
event support to the Great Caledonian Junior Run and the televised races on BBC
Grandstand. They will also be ‘getting their hands on’ some of the worlds
elite runners on the Friday evening, providing an injury prevention and massage
service. ASMC staff use this as a
good team building exercise.
The
ASMC has also entered into an agreement with Inverurie Loco Works to provide
physiotherapy treatment and will be working with the club on helping reduce
injury.
ASMC
has offered to come out to clubs to make presentations to parents, athletes and
youngsters on the benefits of warm-up / down and injury prevention.

To Get Your Nominations In!
It’s
almost that time of year again! The annual Sports Awards Evening will take place
in May and Aberdeenshire Sports Council are seeking nominations from
individuals, schools, community groups, clubs and organisations - in fact anyone
who knows a talented sportsperson, coach or volunteer deserving of an award,
which must mean almost everybody can nominate someone!
There
are 12 categories:

•

• Female Outstanding Achievement
Last
year over 180 people packed the Macdonald Thainstone House Hotel, Inverurie for
the Aberdeenshire Sports Council 2001 Sports Awards Evening.
We
received over 100 nominations and the selection panel had an incredibly
difficult time shortlisting the nominees for each of the 12 categories due to
the exceptionally high quality of nominees.
Attractive
Edinburgh Crystal Awards were presented to the winners of each of the
categories, with all shortlisted nominees receiving a framed certificate and
other nominees a laminated certificate.
The
evening has proved to be a great success and is a way of rewarding and
acknowledging Aberdeenshire sports people for their commitment to and/or
achievement in sport (or, in the case of the Service to Sport category, over
many years). The achievements and success of the nominees underlies the wealth
of talented sportspeople in Aberdeenshire and the commitment given to sport by
so many people.
Nominations
are requested for achievement in and/or commitment to sport by Aberdeenshire
sportspeople during 2001 or the 2001/2002 season. Please complete and return the
nomination form on Page 8.
“We
have always had a tremendous response to requests for nominations, however there
are always many more worthy sportspeople who don’t receive recognition because
nobody has nominated them!”, explained Mike Seed.
So
don’t delay, complete and post that form today! Or, to arrive no later than
Friday 5th April 2002.
N.B.
Any businesses, clubs or individuals who may be interested in sponsoring an
award category or even the whole event are asked to contact Mike Seed on 01261
813383, E-mail: mike.seed@aberdeenshire.gov.uk,
to discuss the benefits of sponsorship, etc.
